The Morrigan
The Morrigan is an animated short in a comic book style which I’ve used as a contemporary medium to tell an old story.
Mythology is a very important part of Irish culture and a large influence on my work. The characters in particular, their surreal stories and personality depth resonate with me. My short centres around the mythological Irish Goddess Morrigan and the hero Cúchulainn and depicts their tumultuous relationship through the centuries and returns to their origins in the first century. The different time periods featured in the piece are differentiated by their own unique colour palettes, the characters design changes in line with this too. Combined, these elements reintroduce the characters in a more modern retelling of their folklore.
Through my piece I developed on Morrigan and Cúchulainn’s personalities making them relatable to a modern audience. These tales have been passed on by word of mouth for centuries and I believe their folklore and cultural significance should be maintained. My animation is a means of re-establishing these characters with the audience through a more contemporary medium.
