Within these Worlds
‘Within these Worlds’ is a short story exploring the narrative that exists between fiction and reality through the cultural significance of myth and superstition. Through a combination of traditional and digital illustrative techniques, the tale aims to examine the essence of imagination, how fiction shapes our ideas and beliefs, and the roots of superstition within contemporary society. The story explores the dichotomy between the synthesis of pagan and Christian traditions and the contemporary Ireland of the Celtic Tiger. The Irish landscape is scattered with holy wells which hold cultural significance in their distinctive ability to adapt through time. Understood to be a meeting point between the world we inhabit and that of the Daoine SĂdhe, a holy well exists as a place of offering, a tradition that has transcended the belief system from which it was created. Throughout the narrative, these traditions, beliefs and the essence of the development of Irish culture is explored through the eyes of young children in an attempt to address the place for myth within this changing world.
