Ascension
Ascension is a stop-motion animation created with charcoal on canvas. Each frame is hand drawn and manipulated to create the illusion of movement. It is concerned with transcendental theory, which proposes that there is more to this life than immediate existence. The Ascension is a depiction of the metamorphosis between darkness into light.
The concept of transcendence is prevalent in religion, wisdom traditions and spiritual ideologies. The assertion of someone onto a higher heavenly plain is a universal narrative. Taking inspiration from the female form and the iconography of the Immaculate Mother Mary, the Ascension portrays this spiritual narrative as an emotive struggle through a constantly evolving landscape.
Transcendence can be understood as a form of progression and growth moving past resistance and limitations. The ‘Ascension’ portrays this natural struggle as a symbolic truth universal to all humans and life.
The ‘Ascension’ is an account of this inherent desire for positive change and the determination to achieve it.
