The Phantom X Centre
Drawing from a personal hobby, a space was designed, specifically for the gaming community, an area of art that is often forgotten, and in general, does not have a collective physical space to retreat to as there isn’t many places as such available within Ireland.
The Phantom X Centre creates a space for people to enjoy video games, meet new people and for some, reminisce on old gaming habits. The centre will also be able to house different events such as Esports competitions and other fan focused events.
Housed in what is currently the Glór building, in Ennis, County Clare, the centre has a Gaming Area, Merchandise Shop, a fan art Gallery, and a recreational area, along with other functional spaces.
The objective of this design is to create a place where the gaming community can come together. For some, it will be a place to hone their skills while for others it will be a recreational space to meet people with similar interests.
The initial inspiration for this design was taken from a historic sword, drawing upon the two opposing materials of leather and metal. From this starting point a materials pallet and clear separation of light and dark spaces grew. The areas representing the blade became the dark spaces, creating a sharp and harsh environment, while the natural feel of the leather is carried through to recreational space which consists of a cafe, mobile gaming spots and an indoor picnic area.
For this design, the gaming remote is the epitome of the modern-day sword, it is a weapon of choice for the online fights you charge into with battle mates. As technology for gaming has progressed so has the modern-day sword, often known as the lightsaber. Its shape inspired and informed many of the bespoke elements that run through the design of the interior spaces. The unique yet consistent shapes are more distinct on the floor plans, door openings, as well as wall, and ceiling designs.
