The Impact of Assistive Technology on Individuals Living with Sight Loss
The goal of this project is to bridge a gap that currently exists in representation for people living with sight loss in mainstream media. This is an infomercial style video that highlights the existence of assistive technologies available for people with sight loss using the real-life story and input of an individual who is legally blind. This project is an attempt to supply the Nation Council for the Blind (NCBI) with a video that meets a high standard and supplies relevant insight into the impact of assistive technology for people with sight loss. This video was created in collaboration with NCBI so that the research and film output would be informed by experts in the field. Following research needed for the development of this project, it became apparent that there is a lack of accurate representation of people living with sight loss. Many video content that does exist in relation to this topic contains damaging stereotypes and attempts to paint the person living with sight loss as someone who is incapable of being independent. Stereotypes like this were avoided in this project by interviewing the participant prior to filming and getting his personal insight into what day to day life is like and how assistive technology can be hugely beneficial.
