Printmaking Contemporary Practice

Paddy Murphy

My work explores such concepts as Existentialism, Self-expression and the Chaos of the Subconscious.
Existentialism, in the broader sense, is a 20th century philosophy that is centred upon the analysis of existence and of the way humans find themselves existing in the world. It can be elaborated as being the awareness of ones actions and how those actions shapes their relations to the society around them. Showing the tensions between the internal forces represented by the insistence of ones right to freedom of choice, joy, or pleasure. Confronted by the external forces represented by society’s restrictions or laws. Expressing the anxieties of coming to terms with one’s own significance. The awareness of the complete lack of significance to the life itself and the insistence of the individual.
I created this body of work because I feel that even though the concept of existentialism may appear dejected or down heartening. I believe that this body of work has a universal appeal attached to it. Because I believe that everyone at one time or another has experienced a feeling of being alone in a space. Confronted by the consequences of one’s own actions in life and felt deformed or psychologically distorted by such realisations.
