Nearly There
“Nearly There” was the final submission for Donagh O’Shea’s 4th year Creative Music Composition/Performance module. In this module we were tasked with composing a piece of music in your chosen style, then through rehearsals, teach members of the class the piece which was then performed as part of a concert at the end of term.
I am proud of the way it turned out and for all the work my classmates that played on it put into learning it. Some of them had never worked on this genre before so the collaborative process was significant. It was important to me that anyone that played on it, brought their music to my piece and did not merely play exactly what I had written for them. In working this way I feel the personalities of the musicians ultimately enhance the composition.
My chosen style for the piece is Traditional Irish but during the composition part of the yearlong module I was encouraged to explore rhythm and structure that are not necessarily common in Traditional Music.
The musicians on this piece are: Joe Julian Grace – Concertina, Kevin Meehan – Whistles, Donagh O’Shea – Piano, Dylan Traynor – Moog Bass, Jack Walsh – Drum Programming, Jack Broderick – Drum Programming, Paddy Kerr – Bouzouki.
