Heirloom
An heirloom is an object that has belonged to a family for a very long time and has been handed down from one generation to another. Unfortunately for my family these have long been stolen or left behind when moving to Ireland, however traditions have remained and have been cherished as a bonding activity to each other and generations past.
Heirloom tells the story of a mother and daughter learning to sew and trying to keep this old tradition alive while doing their best to help their family financially. It invites the viewer to treasure precious memories of learning and teaching and to appreciate the messiness of the process without too much guilt. Vintage and new objects are brought to life together in stop motion for a playful depiction of the garment making process along with a gentle palette of desaturated pastels with a few pops of bright colours, culminating in a feeling of warm nostalgia akin to a childhood memory.
