KIMPWENE
“KIMPWENE” narrates a cultural transition of my mother and fathers’ journey from Kinshasa, Congo DRC to Europe. The collection tells the story of adapting from one culture to another. As part of the narrative the collection is about the connection between my parents, a love story, and the similarities and differences between my mother and father. My father, representing the Western elements in the collection and my mother, representing the traditional elements; the layering and wrapping of the colourful African wax cotton. My base garments consist of suiting, denim, cotton, embroidery print and satin, all representing the Western aspect of the narrative. Built on top of the base garments are the emulations of my father’s ‘western’ inspired wardrobe; colourful African printed wax cottons, which represent a tradition and home culture of Congo. The base garments which are ‘western inspired’ all in black and white, act as the base to bring out the freedom flow and dynamics of the drape.
