Lucy
“Dyspraxia affects up to 8% of the population but due to it’s varied symptoms, it can often go undiagnosed.”
‘Lucy’ is a traditional and stop motion piece that explores the condition of dyspraxia. ‘Lucy’ is made in response to Luke Kelly’s song “Scorn not his simplicity”. A song about difference and separation.
‘Lucy’ is a story about the migration of a butterfly. This delicate and interesting creature is used as a metaphor for people with a disability.
The colour palette throughout is used to accentuate the issue that people with disabilities may not be accepted or fully connected with the world. A two tone colour palette emphasizes a feeling of separation and longing for acceptance. Conversely the bright colour palette of the butterfly represents innocence and naivety.
With an aim towards awareness, ‘Lucy’ promotes mindfulness towards people who have disabilities. Often times we are too busy in our own lives to be aware of how we effect and treat others. ‘Lucy’ is a visual representation of the obstacles that may face people with disabilities.
