Edel Canavan
Act Natural
The focus of Edel Canavan’s work is to look at the distortion that can be created within a space using materials and reflective surfaces. The artist explores the interaction between the audience and the work, considering how the materials draw in the viewer. She has constructed large scale, sculptural pieces in order to break up the figure and move away from looking at the traditional view of the figure. Her work revolves around the idea of looking at the body while trying to incorporate and engagement with the viewer. The subject matter is motivated by the idea of distorting the body and the identity around individuals and their sense of self. She creates abstract paintings that are a result of distortion. The work has a sharp and cold quality regarding the materials being used. The is contrasted with the idea of inviting the viewer in to interact with the work.
