Sculpture & Combined Media
Casey Cogavin
The concept of my work is rooted in my interest in conserving the environmental landscape and folklore traditions of Ireland. I consolidate this interest by creating poetic narratives in relation to how we may share the landscape with figures from folklore and bring to light, our duty of environmental stewardship.
Looking at issues such as exploitation of the earth’s natural resources, deforestation, and ecosystem restoration, I work with recycled wood and materials I find in forests and bogs as materials for expressing these environmental concerns.
As a mode of communicating the meaning of my work I utilise Ogham, the Early Medieval Irish alphabet sometimes referred to as the Celtic Tree alphabet. I translate my poetry which addresses various environmental issues and inscribe these Ogham translations onto wood.
The installation of my work takes place in the natural landscape as a homage to the original source of my inspiration.
