The River
“The River” is a short film produced by Caoimhe Daly. The film explores the memory of how our protagonist, Alara, feeling reminiscent, looks back on the memories of her youth when she felt lost, alone, and found solace in the night and in poetry, which later inspired her poem, ‘The River’.
Caoimhe wanted to create a self portrait of her poetry, using old technology, such as the camcorder, to portray the feeling of nostalgia. Caoimhe wanted to pay homage to one of the things that she loves the most: poetry and the visuals that it can portray. Caoimhe has been writing poetry since 2016 and this is her first time showcasing it publicly. She created the poem, ‘The River’, specifically for this short film.
She was inspired by how people perceive things through our own personal perspectives, and how people paint their memories with a wistful paint brush of sentimental longing. Caoimhe was born in one of the towns that the River Maigue flows through, which is home to the famous Maigue Poets, and has always had the sense of connection with rivers, as they are what cities and towns were built up around and connects us all.
