From Z, To A.
A film with eccentricity and opulence, this Wes Anderson Film, The Grand Budapest Hotel explores tragedy, war, friendship, and loyalty as it follows the journey of Zero (the lobby boy) and Agatha (a local baker). My collection is based on the relationship of the youngest two main characters, the challenges they face, and the skills that bond them. Paying particular attention to the main female character, Agatha who’s brave yet somewhat naïve character is the foundation of this collection.
With a significant focus on the classic form of tailoring using innovative pattern cutting techniques this womenswear collection has a vintage and masculine aesthetic, with strong shoulders, symmetric silhouette, and layered lapels. Inspiration for the colour story and fabric choice was drawn from the extravagant interior decoration of the hotel, using geometric and floral brocades to represent the carpet and wallpaper, stripe suiting as a direct relation to the suits worn by male hotel staff and tonal taffeta to reflect the quirky and eccentric hotel vibe. This womenswear collection plays on the idea of women wearing men’s clothing with a feminine silhouette.
Each piece includes multiple straps that tunnel in and around the layers of the garment and tie in a ribbon much like the mechanics of the Mendls patisserie box. Not unlike the ties of Agatha’s apron, these straps are knotted together on the body to give a feminine fit. Simplified line drawing elements of the characters’ faces feature on each garment through stitching and embroidery, bringing personality to each piece.
