Sculpture & Combined Media
Ashleigh Byrne
Ashleigh Byrne employs empirical research mythologies to explore the behaviours of materials that are normally associated with the construction industry. She is interested in looking at how such materials can be reappropriated for sculptural purposes.
Byrne looks at the dialog that occurs between materials, allowing narratives to develop through the work while allowing the audience to create their own interpretations. Her practice is rooted in the basic understanding of how objects work, how aesthetics work and how abstract sculptures can be resolved.
“It’s about taking materials associated with the building trade and flipping them on their head, creating installations where these materials can stand alone, admired for their own essence and integrity.”
Byrnes latest piece “Parasite” is a collaboration with Irish music artist Cynema. The subject focal point of the project is scrim tape, a self-adhesive tape made of a firm, open-weave fabric, and one of the most commonly used plastering supplies. Byrne realised the potential of the material, its ability to hold lines, curves and emotion. With the addition of lighting, VFX and post production the material holds its own and provides an engaging and emotive accompaniment to Cynema’s upcoming single.
