Le Voyage Dans La Lune
Winner of Student Designer of the Year- Irish Fashion Innovation Awards 2019. (‘Le Voyage Dans La Lune’) is derived from my love of cinema which I have learned so much about from my father who is a filmmaker. I was particularly inspired by the early French films of George Melies. Melies was known for the spectacular moving images he produced by blending magic, illusion and cinema. These motion pictures are other worldly, eccentric and extremely unusual. To create my collection, I focused on three key images from the 1902 film, ‘le voyage dans la lune’. My collection is reflective of the hallucinogenic journey to the moon that melies takes us on. I developed my spec by loosely drawing over and collaging with the lines and shapes evident in the images I loved from the film and then using innovative pattern drafting to push the theatrical storyline within my collection. I pushed this process further by using my initial toiles to do stand work. I particularly focused in on the sun, the moon and the stars from the beginning of my collection, and then on the chaos that unfolds once melies’s travellers land on the moon. I created an ethereal-feeling atmosphere with a voluminous spec and a colour story that juxtaposes the tonal imagery from the film with a remastered colour version of the film with murky gold, greens and pastels. I created prints reflecting the strange imagery and celestial bodies present in the film. The dramatic, theatrical and cinematic journey melies takes us on is carried throughout my collection in its spec, colour story, prints, innovative pattern cutting and rich fabrics.
