Printmaking Contemporary Practice
Olivia Murphy
Swing, Sweep, Swoop
Olivia Murphy’s body of work has been looking at nostalgia, curiosity and the interactive nature between people and places. She has been creating a visual diary that is internalised in the body, portraying this through the lens of popular visual culture and personification. The memories of these places then build the identity that surrounds us daily. For architecture is memory and memory is a form of architecture. The places the artist is in creates a repeating effect on her and a constant replay creates restrictions and makes her lose her curiosity of her surroundings. This is where the flamingo comes into play for the flamingo represents being social, having fun and creating a balance and gratitude for those around you. The body has also been a subject matter, the artist has been interested in how it can be moved and distorted, covered up or stripped down. She uses her body as a vehicle in her practice and pulling from queer aspects with bright colours, simple drawing styles and freedom of expression.
