My collection is based on the story of the Berlin Wall. This wall divided a country, a city and a people. Aiming to exemplify the physicality of the wall, I have focused on creating garments with tailored fit and structure. In order to depict the wall’s eventual fall, I have used pattern cutting to demonstrate the collapsing structure. The wall, which was originally painted white, became a blank canvas through which graffiti manifested into a creative resistance. My collection began with a white base fabric, creating a canvas which enabled me to incorporate texture and colour. I have developed the textures for my collection in response to the waste which accumulates within garment production. By recycling the scrap leftovers, layering and painting them, I have created a transition of colour from dark grey tones to more colourful shades of blues and pinks. These colours demonstrate the presence of the wall for those who lived on either side of it. From the initial construction in 1961 to the celebratory atmosphere of freedom when the wall fell in 1989. The collection of images printed on each garment convey the reality of life for those on either side of the wall. These images allow us to reflect on the statement “The worlds too small for walls” which is written on the remaining sections of the wall today.
