Please Do Pick the Flowers
Urban public spaces have declined in use over recent years due in part to the increase of social media and the privatisation of public space. Public spaces are important sites for recreation, protest and citizens interaction. Often the most beneficial public spaces are those that begin at the grass roots level.
The Placemaking movement, made prevalent by urbanist William H Whyte suggests that urban public spaces are brought to life through community’s participation and interaction. A café can be a place to meet friends, a city square can be a place to protest and a park can be a place to play. Communities can revive their public spaces. But first, they must discover the potential of their public spaces.
‘Please Do Pick the Flowers’ uses Placemaking to create an environment for discovery. Through interaction with a series of cabinets, participants can discover the extraordinary, the mundane and the ridiculous in three districts of an imagined city.
