INTERACTIVE DIGITAL INSTALLATION WITH KINECT
The Microsoft Kinect is a 3D camera that has the ability to interpret depth in 3D space. It has become increasingly popular in the realm of digital art and performance as artists and creators have began harnessing its capabilities to produce a vast array of uses for the device. This final year project attempts to harness the power of the sensor.
This project explores the creation of an interactive digital installation using the Microsoft Kinect Sensor as a primary means of interaction. The user can enter the installation space and by moving and gesturing, they will be able to control graphical elements that are projected onto a large wall in front of them.
Their movements will also generate atmospheric sounds and musical notes resulting in an immersion in a multimedia experience.
The technologies that were explored during the creation of this project include:
Quartz Composer – visual programming environment, VDMX – real-time video effects, Ableton Live 9 – audio generation/effects, Microsoft Kinect Sensor – 3D space camera, OSC – Open Sound Control communication protocol, MIDI – Musical Instrument Digital Interface and Max/Msp – visual programming environment
