People Watching
People Watching follows a minimum wage worker, Leslie, who works at a petrol station in a small Irish town. Becoming jaded by the monotony of her colourless life, Leslie decides to turn to her place of work in a last-ditch effort to free herself from the weariness weighing on her mind. Her hope is that through being present in the moment she may begin to appreciate the quiet and the ordinary, observing and engaging with the customers who at one point she wrote off as plain and pedestrian, and perhaps even find wonder and beauty in the mundane.
Leslie is based on myself as I came to appreciate the company of the customers at my job, all of their quirks, their attitude, and the stories they all had to tell. After my father passed away it gave me a new appreciation for life, for how precious it is, how every moment spent living is a gift that not everyone gets to enjoy, even the quiet, monotonous tasks of the everyday.
