Parasocial Activity
Parasocial Activity is a website created to inform and spread awareness about the modern-day phenomenon of parasocial relationships; an unrequited, imaginary relationship between a media user and a media personality. The platform breaks down the complex psychology behind this phenomenon – in a what-why-where-how structure to be easily understood by the viewer. The video on the landing page introduces the user to the topic, giving cultural context through visuals of screaming fans at concerts and fans engaging in parasocial interaction online.
The concept behind the bitmap-style and floating pixels throughout the website reflects the online nature of these relationships in today’s society. The serif typeface is informed by the psychology-related research used to examine the content, as many studies and articles use a refined serif typeface in line with academic standards. To compliment this informative tone, a black, white and grey colour palette is used with pops of pink, commonly associated with love and relationships. The website is also accompanied by short animations as a visual aid throughout, explaining the different subject areas. The mission of the website is to educate, raise awareness and nudge towards a shift in the future of fan culture in the mass media industry.
