Niamh Elizabeth Batty
Social Theatre
Niamh Batty’s practice explores the sociological phenomenon of performative behaviours within social dynamics by working primarily in Videography and audio work.
Niamh’s current work, titled “social Theatre”, was inspired by her own frustration surrounding pre-established socially constructed behaviours, pleasantries and micro-expressions.
Influenced by academic spheres including sociology and psychology, Niamh has researched and understood the evolution of, necessity for and overall reasoning behind persona performance within social settings.
Through the research of psychology, anthropology and sociology with a specific focus on individuals such as Charles Cooley, Erving Goffman, Carl Jung and Karl Marx, this project communicates these literary phenomenons by introducing a personal discomfort in relation to consistent performance. This exploration articulates these themes through the use of artistic expression.
Creating a visual explanation of the overwhelming pressure felt when expected to perform perfectly, this piece explores a variety of emotions and thoughts that are realised into visual and audio format.
