This body of work explores a series of events that took place in Thurles, Co. Tipperary in 1838. This series of events started with the mass evictions of tenants on the lands of Valentine Maher MP and the reprisal killing of his land agent Charles O’Keefe, these events and similar incidents in Tipperary involving land disputes shook the British administration in Ireland and even went as far as The House of Lords in London.
This series of images and accompanying video piece explores the locations central to these events and the effect of land disputes and evictions on Irish society and the Irish psyche.
The aesthetic of this project is intended to give the viewer the sense that they are looking at a historical exhibit.
The still image work in this project was created using a 16mm still camera and these images were also utilised in making film loops for analogue video projection. This was an aesthetic choice to accompany the use of archival footage in the main video piece.
